Dissertation and Thesis Preparation

Basics

Students must submit a Thesis Proposal to a Head of Department at least 6 months prior to the submission of a Master’s thesis/ Doctoral Dissertation for examination, or at any specific deadline that the department assigns.

Procedure

Fill out a Thesis/Dissertation Proposal Form (Forms may be picked up at one’s department)→Get approval on the Thesis/Dissertation Proposal Form from a supervisor → Submit the Thesis/Dissertation Proposal Form to the department

* If the title of a thesis/dissertation is changed, then the Thesis/Dissertation Title Change form is required to be submitted to the department.

Eligibility Requirements to Submit Dissertation for Examination

  • Students who passed the qualification examinations(foreign language/ comprehensive exam)
  • Students who completed the online training course for Research ethics produced by KIRD (www.kird.re.kr)
  • Students assigned to take supplementary courses must have the acquired credits
  • Students who have finished coursework and current students who are expecting to complete their coursework within the current semester
  • Students who have qualified in the individual departmental rules

    • Good quality, white, unlined, non-punched A4 (210×297mm) paper with a minimum weight of 80g must be used for the original copy.
  • Order of Components
    • First Cover page: Form 1 (On the top of the page, requirements for Masters/Doctoral degree should be written for any examination, or Degree Theses/Dissertations as a final copy.) [Download]

    • ※ The order of an abstract in Korean and an abstract in English should be reversed with regard to the contents of research.
      • Text - ‘Arae Hangul (hwp)’ and MS Word are approved; Wordian files are unacceptable.
      • Font Size: 11 point in all research fields (9 point for footnotes)
      • Text type: Title- HY GeonMyeongChe, Main body &Foot notes-BaTangChe (for hwp)
      • Spacing: Double-spaced
      • Margins (mm)
      • Top: 35mm Header: 0 mm
      • Left: 35 mm Right: 30 mm
      • Bottom: 25mm Footer: 15 mm
    • * The Cover Page should keep the same margin gap on both the left and right sides.
    • Numbering of titles should be kept in the following order:
      • Korean: 1. 가. 1) 가) (1) (가)
      • English: 1. A. 1) a) (1) (a)
    • Pictures or photographs should be in color and keep the original colors.
    • The date of approval with the signatures of the committee members should be printed on the hard copy.

Deadlines

The following are the deadline dates for Thesis/Dissertation submission (Expected graduates of February, 2020)

  • Submission of Thesis/Dissertation for Examination
    • Doctoral degree: 2020. 9. 28.(Mon.) ~ 10. 5.(Mon.)
    • Master’s degree: 2020. 10. 5.(Mon.) ~ 10. 12.(Mon.)
    • Location: All documents and theses/dissertations should be submitted to the respective departmental offices.
  • Required Documents
    • One copy of Thesis/Dissertation Examination Approval Form
    • A copy of Thesis/Dissertation for the examination (Master’s: 3 copies, Doctorates: 5 copies)
      * Thesis/Dissertation for the examination should be delivered to the committee members in person.
    • A copy of a Receipt of Examination Fees
      - Account information for Examination Fee Payment: Kwangju Bank 074-107-437304 Chonnam National University (Examination Fee)
    • Examination Fees (Master’s: 100,000 Won, Doctorates: 300,000Won) must be wire-transferred to the designated bank account together with the sender’s student number during the submission period of Theses/Dissertations for the examination.
    • A copy of the Appointment of Examiner Form (For External Examiners, the information of a bank account and association should be included in the form.)
    • Thesis/Dissertation Examiners should be appointed by a Head of department and a thesis/dissertation supervisor according to department regulations.
    • The department is responsible for checking whether the submitted theses/dissertations follow the stipulated and correct formatting structures

  • Appointment of Thesis/Dissertation Examiners
    • Deadline
      • Doctoral degree: ~ 2020. 10. 5.(Mon.)
      • Master’s degree: ~ 2020. 10. 12.(Mon.)
    • Required Qualifications of Examiners
      Doctoral dissertation: Faculty members with a professorial position and full-time lecturer with a doctoral degree
      Master’s theses: Faculty members with a full-time lecturer position or higher
      • Assembling the Committee of Examiners
        • - Doctoral examination: One Head Examiner, Four Examiners
        • - Master’s examination: One Head Examiner, and 2 Examiners
      • The decisions about the appointment of external examiners or the number of external examiners should be made based on each department’s regulations.
      • The examiners may appoint an Emeritus Professor or experts in the relevant field as external examiners.
        A thesis/dissertation supervisor or co-supervisor cannot be the Head Examiner but can be included in an examination committee.
      • When a supervisor takes a sabbatical away from the university or goes on a research trip outside of the country for less than a year, supervisors are responsible for submitting a supervision plan and a supervision report after the thesis/dissertation examination
        * The Head of Department nominates candidates for a thesis/dissertation examination committee, and the Dean of the College appoints the Examination Committee and submits the list to the Graduate School by the due date.
  • Thesis/Dissertation Examination Period (Preliminary, Interim, and Final Examinations)
    • Date: 2020. 10. 13.(Tue.) ~ 12. 18.(Fri.)
      * Thesis/Dissertation Examinations take place in the department under the supervision of the Chair of the Examination Committee. At least three examinations for doctoral dissertations (including the Oral Defense) should be held, and two examinations for master’s theses.
  • Oral Defense with the public audience
  • Date: The Oral Defense with a public audience should be scheduled anytime during the examination period.
    * Oral Defense with a public audience should be held under the supervision of the Dean of the College, and the candidate is responsible for submitting all the required forms, including a final report of the results of the defense.
  • Final Submission Requirements
    • Date: 2020. 12. 21.(Mon.) ~ 12. 24.(Thu.)
    • Submission: All required forms must be submitted to the Head of the Department, the Dean of the College, and to the Head Office of the University.
    • Document Requirements
      • Signed Examination Approval from all members of the Examination Committee
      • Signed Thesis or Dissertation Approval Form from each member of the Examination Committee
      • One copy of the Examination Schedule (for Doctoral Examination)
      • Three copies (or more) of the Interim Examination Report
      • One copy of the Examination Report in Summary (for doctoral dissertations)
      • One copy of the Department Report on the Oral Defense with a General Audience
      • One copy of the Approval of Thesis/Dissertation Deferral (for those who are required)

      • The final submission includes one copy of the thesis/dissertation which is signed by all Examination Committee members and Three duplicates of the original signed copies.
      • Refer to the Standard English Romanization for the names of each department on the University Homepage.
  • Graduate School Committee
    • Date: 2021. February
    • Agenda: Final approval of Theses/Dissertations
  • Notes
    • The Dean of the College is responsible for evaluating the candidate’s qualifications adhering to the policies and standards of the Graduate School.
    • After the Interim Examination is conducted, the Head of the Department is responsible for submitting all forms and requirements to the Administration Office in the department. The Head of the Department ensures that the same stamp is used on all documents and the Final Approval Forms.
    • The Graduate School must be informed about reasons for any delays in submitting dissertations and theses and the candidates must submit a signed Delay Approval Form to the Administration Office in her/his respective department.
    • Effective from January 1, 2000: Candidates are expected to submit the final Theses/Dissertations electronically for official collection (to the Thesis/Dissertation Management System).

    • The candidates must pass the Language and Written Graduate Exam respectively and fulfill the credit requirements.

  • Electronic Submission of the final, post - defense theses/dissertations
    • The thesis/dissertation should be submitted in one file.
    • The size of the file should be smaller than 50MB.
    • The file name should be labeled with the candidate’s name or student number.
    • Illustrations should be included in the main body.
    • The candidates are responsible for thorough proofreading.
    • Do not use any active web links within the electronic submission (if this function was used, it should be deleted in the final file).
    • The page numbers on the table of contents should match to those of the actual pages.
    • No manipulation or change in spacing is allowed.
      ☞ If the size of a file is larger than the stipulated requirements, the resolution should be lowered to 300 dpi.
      ☞ All thesis formatting requirements must comply with specific formatting requirements in order to be approved and accepted by the Graduate School of CNU.
      ☞ For electronic submission of final theses/dissertations, candidates are responsible for following the manual on the university homepage.

    • How to submit final theses/dissertations electronically
      • Click on “d-Collection” at the bottom of the main page
      • Log on first and click the “Notice and Thesis/Dissertation Submission Manual”.
      • Follow the guideline of the manual and upload the thesis/dissertation.
      • Check that the candidate information is properly completed and correct any errors if necessary.
      • Ensure all remaining steps are reviewed and completed in full.
      • Once the submission is completed, a notice confirming the receipt and status will be received within few seconds.
      • When the message that says “Thank you. The submission is completed” appears on the screen, the submission has been completed successfully.
      • Print a copy of the Theses/Dissertation Submission Confirmation Form and the Copyright and License Agreement Form, and submit them with the bound copies of the final thesis/dissertation at the same time to the Office of Student Records.
        * It takes 24 hours for the uploaded file to be finally approved.
        * Submitted theses/dissertations can be downloaded anytime by the candidate at the ”d-Collection” web link.
  • Notice
    • Required Documents
      • Master’s Degree/Doctoral Degree: Three soft bound copies (Five soft bound copies for the Department of Law)
      • The Final Thesis/Dissertation Confirmation Form and the Copyright and License Agreement Form (for both master’s and doctoral degree)
    • Notice
      • All candidates should ensure that the “Thesis/Dissertation for Master’s/Doctoral Degree” is printed on the cover sheet and title page of the final thesis/dissertation.
      • The thesis/dissertation should be submitted in one file.
      • The size of the file should be smaller than 50MB.
      • The file name should be labeled with the candidate’s name or student number.
      • The electronic copy and the printed copy should be identical (particularly, the illustrations, tables, and pictures must be positioned in an identical location on both copies.)
      • The electronic submission should be completed two days prior to the submission of the bound copy, and the Thesis/Dissertation Electronic Submission Confirmation Form should be also submitted simultaneously with the printed bound copies.
      • All bound copies must be signed by each Examination Committee member and one copy must contain the original signatures.
      • For those who write their theses/dissertations in English, please refer to the style guide that can be downloaded from the Resource Room on the Homepage.
      • In an English abstract, the name of the department should be spelled according to the Romanized forms found on the university website.
  • Cancellation of Degree
    • After the degree is granted, if the candidate is found to commit any unethical and illegal doings or bring disgrace on the degree or institution, the Dean of the University is allowed to cancel the degree from the holder through the examination of the Graduate School.
